Wisdom Teeth Removal in Bonita Springs

Bonita Springs Wisdom Teeth Removal

If it has been determined that you need your wisdom teeth removed, then the procedure can be performed by a dentist at our office. The tooth removal procedure is known as an extraction. Extraction procedures can be either of the two types: simple extraction or surgical extraction.

Many times wisdom teeth removals tend to be surgical extractions which occur below the gums. If wisdom teeth can grow in successfully above the gum line, then they probably would not need to be extracted (simple extractions occur for teeth that are visible and accessible, located above the gums).

The surgical extraction consists of cutting into the gums and removing the troublesome tooth from within. Surgery is preceded by the use of an anesthetic. Sedation is often applied, especially when removing all four wisdom teeth.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in our mouths (last teeth in the back of the mouth one on each side; both top and bottom rows of teeth. 4 total) that appear near the surface of the gums usually between the ages of 17 and 24. They are our last teeth to develop and can often do so problematically.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth Extraction Bonita Springs
Wisdom teeth are impacted if they are unable to protrude through the gums. Sometimes wisdom teeth are impacted because, although there was enough space for them to develop below the surface of the gums, there is no room for them to come out into the mouth adequately. Impacted molars can cause complications such as tension and pressure, misaligned teeth, damaged teeth, pain, and infection.

Impacted teeth are often removed. The American Dental Association recommends that all persons between ages 17 to 21 should have their wisdom teeth examined to determine if they need removing.

Wisdom Teeth Pain and Recovery

After surgery, there is some pain and bleeding that follows. It is important to note any aftercare instructions provided by your Bonita Springs dentist or oral surgeon. Pain killers are most often prescribed. Antibiotics may also be prescribed. Gause can be placed on the recovering areas to help clot the bleeding.

Additionally, bleeding should subside in after the first few days and swelling should reduce significantly after a week. Full recovery can take 4 to 6 weeks. Daily activities can presume the day of or the following day once the anesthetic wears off. Do not rinse the mouth for the first 24 hours after surgery. Liquid only diets are highly recommended immediately following surgery, then gradually move onto eating soft foods.

Risks for Removing Wisdom Teeth

A problem known as “dry socket” may develop after the procedure. Dry socket occurs when a blood clot does not form or breaks off too early. It results in the underlying bone being exposed to air and food, which can be very painful. Dry sockets emerge nearly a third of the time after the removal of impacted teeth. Other possible risks are damage to teeth surrounding the extraction site as well as the risk of infection.

At Bonita Beach Dental we specialize in removing these teeth without damaging the surrounding teeth. Many dentists rush through this but we take pride in our lack of complications and our wisdom teeth extraction results.
